Women are as good as men and dare to reach for the moon

Xiao Hengmei

At 4:27 a.m. on October 29, 2024, the Shenzhou 19 spacecraft was successfully launched again. The Shenzhou 19 flight crew consists of three astronauts, Cai Xuzhe, Song Lingdong, and Wang Haoze. Cai Xuzhe serves as the commander. Song Lingdong and Wang Haoze are both from the third batch of Chinese astronauts. Both of them are “post-90s” and are performing flight missions for the first time. Among them, Song Lingdong was an air force pilot before being selected; Wang Haoze was a senior engineer at the Aerospace Propulsion Technology Research Institute of China Aerospace Science and Technology Corporation before being selected. She is the only female space flight engineer in China as of 2024 and the third woman in China to perform a manned space flight mission.

There is nothing that girls can’t do

Wang Haoze was born in Luanping County, Hebei Province in 1990. His mother is a middle school teacher. His mother dropped out of school when she was young due to poverty, but she still squeezed out time to study by herself while doing farm work. She was eventually admitted to a normal school and became a teacher, which completely changed her fate. Her mother’s words and deeds guided the young Wang Haoze that she must work harder to succeed; her parents instilled in her since she was a child: there is nothing that girls can’t do! With this extraordinary tenacity, she studied on New Year’s Eve, and her academic performance was always among the best. She was admitted to Southeast University’s Thermal Energy and Power Engineering major in the college entrance examination; during college, Wang Haoze’s grades remained at the forefront of the grade, and she won honorary awards such as national scholarships, and was successfully recommended to the engineering thermal physics major of the school to pursue a master’s degree. She likes running, and often represented the school in provincial sports games when she was in college. The persistence in exercise during her student days laid a good physical foundation for an astronaut.

Challenge the unknown and keep the habit of doing things seriously

She dares to challenge unknown areas and enjoys the sense of accomplishment from nothing to something. Her undergraduate major is thermal energy and power engineering. As a graduate student, she focused on plasma detonation. After graduation, she worked on rocket engine pre-research. Now she has become a space flight engineer… Over the years, Wang Haoze has been constantly involved in new fields. When she was a graduate student, Wang Haoze’s research topic was a brand new field that she had never been involved in. Once, the topic assigned to her by her tutor was particularly difficult, and she couldn’t help complaining: “I may not necessarily engage in scientific research in the future, why should I put in so much effort?” The tutor answered very seriously: “I don’t expect you to do scientific research in the future, but you have to keep the habit of doing things seriously. If you don’t do it seriously now because you don’t like it, when you encounter something you like in the future, you may not have the habit of doing things seriously.” Every word of the tutor’s words is of great importance, engraved in Wang Haoze’s heart, and it has become her criterion for doing things in the future.

Wang Haoze’s connection with aerospace is also due to her mentor’s strong interest in aerospace. After graduation, she worked in the China Aerospace Science and Technology Corporation, engaged in rocket engine pre-research. For her, researching new engines is a process of starting from scratch and building something from nothing. As a system overall designer, she studies the design principles of each subsystem. Complex equations, mysterious parameters, and mysterious operation logic have become the objects of her exploration and research. She enjoys the process of conquering the unknown.

Reaching the moon in the sky, fighting for the country, feeling extremely proud

She has a notebook dedicated to recording her training experience, half of which is about docking training. She made a battle declaration to move forward courageously: “We are now walking on a challenging and seldom traveled road, but I love this road. If it is full of thorns, we will cut through them; if it is lonely and desolate, we will move forward together!”

As the only female astronaut in the third batch of astronauts, she is as brave as a man and is recognized as a “hardworking woman”. She never felt special because she was a woman during training. She felt that she had the strength and confidence to compete fairly with other teammates. She performed well in all training projects and never lowered her requirements for herself. In space, astronauts have to endure the severe test of various complex environments in space, challenging their physiological and psychological limits. Astronauts must undergo repeated and rigorous training to meet standards. The extravehicular procedure training is extremely difficult. Astronauts need to wear an extravehicular space suit weighing more than 100 kilograms to simulate the action of passing through the gate section of the extravehicular space. Because the suit is pressurized by 0.4 atmospheres, Wang Haoze’s movements are more laborious. In addition, in the helmet, the movement of the head is limited, and the field of vision becomes narrow. He can only use the wrist reflector to expand his field of vision.

Through her training experience, we saw the hardships she went through in training, and also saw the special joy in her heart after she completed the training through hard work, which was so vividly described in her writing.

  • Rendezvous and docking: After practicing nearly a thousand times, she said: What was once a huge mountain in front of her can now be “hit the target every time”.
  • 48-hour desert survival training: hot on sunny days and cold on rainy days. I felt the cruelty of the temperature difference of dozens of degrees Celsius in the desert, and also appreciated the romance and tenderness of lying on the umbrella and looking at the brilliant stars in the sky.
  • 72 hours of psychological adaptability training in a small environment: In a house with closed doors and windows, we call it a “small black room”. I and two other teammates formed the “666” team. The three of us fought hard against the biological clock… My thoughts began to wander, and my eyelids gradually gave up resistance. The time was so long that it made me feel like sitting on pins and needles, but my head was like a wandering, gradually drooping, and I could only rely on my cheeks to support myself…

Wang Haoze is full of confidence and expectations for the space journey: “Let every sunrise and sunset become a wonderful memory of the universe.” Who says women are inferior to men? Women are the stars we should chase, the pride of the country, and the future of the nation.
