Meet hometown

— Xiao Hengjuan

“I asked if Lingnan was bad, but I said, ‘My hometown is where my heart is at peace.'” Hometown is the spiritual support for wanderers who travel around the world with homesickness on their backs. Hometown is the place we wanted to escape from when we were young, but when we grow up, we have to stay away from it all year round, unable to return. The round moon during the Mid-Autumn Festival, the train ticket we look forward to during the Spring Festival, and the accent that comes out inadvertently will all cause ripples of homesickness. When we travel tirelessly from mountain to mountain and from river to river, and gradually go farther and farther, we realize that hometown is the blood land of the umbilical cord that cannot be cut off at all. Even if the bones are broken, the blood is still connected. So like you and me, we are eager to go home, and we often go home to visit even if we are thousands of miles away.

I love the landscape of my hometown because I love the land deeply. In Lu Yao’s million-word masterpiece “Ordinary World”, the ordinary is full of deep love for the hometown. The more barren the desolate and magnificent land is, the louder the song of Xintianyou is. That is the way to freedom for the soul. It is on this difficult but nutritious land that Sun Shaoan led the villagers to prosperity, and Sun Shaoping went out to study and work and then returned to his hometown. The spirit of these grassroots heroes inspires us migrant workers to become our own shadows in pursuing our dreams.

Whether it is beautiful or not, it is the water of my hometown; whether it is close or not, it is the people of my hometown; whether it is fragrant or not, it is the taste of my hometown. The taste of my hometown is the greetings from my parents on the regular phone calls, the joy of children surrounding their wanderers, and the home-cooked dishes made by their families. Chili peppers are my homesickness that I can’t erase. My mother knows that I love to eat chili peppers. Every time the chili peppers are harvested, she always takes the opportunity to pick them. How can I do without spicy peppers? When I was a child, when the chili peppers in the field turned red, my mother would take me to pick them and carry them to the market to sell them to supplement the family income; the ones left behind were put on the threshing floor to dry. The fiery red chili peppers were spread out on the threshing floor, just like a child in the mountains tearing off a piece of the morning sun, reflecting the red fields, the red ponds, and the years we grew up. I remember that my family was not rich when I was a child, but chili peppers gave me a good appetite, gave me strength all over my body, and made me develop a spicy character.

Hometown is the source of blood, the cradle of life, and the deep brotherhood of blood. How many people from hometown have been looking for swords in time. Hometown has sweet peaches and plums, and abundant vegetables, which contain the original sweetness of the four seasons. The nature of hometown has inspired the source of creation of literati and poets. The writer Lu Yao wrote about the life belief of “working like an ox and dedicating like the land”. Aunt Quan returned to her hometown after retirement. She took great pains to organize several brothers in their sixties to travel to the capital and then return to their hometown. Tourism and transportation have undergone tremendous changes. Today, when the flowers bloom in March, the 8,000-acre rapeseed flower tourism base reclaimed by hardworking people forms a golden wave, which can not only feel the natural beauty, but also appreciate the historical and cultural heritage of Zeng Guofan’s hometown; the lotus pond of childhood is now a busy figure, and the joy of the harvest cannot be hidden in the smiling face in the lotus pond; in early summer, lotus is appreciated, in midsummer, lotus is picked, and in autumn, lotus roots are dug. A few hundred meters away from the fertile fields, there is a highway for people from hometown to go out of the world and return home.
I left home when I was young and returned when I was old. My accent remains unchanged but my hair has turned gray. Hometown is the starting point and the end point. Therefore, the clearer the place I look back to, the more determined I will be to move forward. A harbor for rest.

Marketing culture of Chinese traditional festivals

— Shi Yinghui

China is a nation with many festivals. The traditions handed down for thousands of years have now evolved into festivals of all sizes. The most popular ones are the Spring Festival, Lantern Festival, Mid-Autumn Festival, Dragon Boat Festival, Qingming Festival, Laba Festival, Chinese Valentine’s Day, Double Ninth Festival, etc. Traditional festivals have a profound impact on people’s lives and consumption habits, and are also conducive to the inheritance of national traditional culture.

During festivals and holidays, the unusual flow of people and the herd mentality of consumption bring rare marketing opportunities to various industries. How to perfectly combine the innovation of marketing planning with the cultural elements of traditional festivals can reflect the deep-level skills of marketing planners and will inevitably push festival marketing to a higher level.

When talking about traditional Chinese festival culture, perhaps the first thing that comes to mind is food culture – people take food as their first priority. A Bite of China is popular all over the country, recording the food culture that has been accumulated for thousands of years in China, as well as the warmth of human feelings behind every dish and soup. In fact, each traditional festival in China has different special foods, which are distinguished from other festivals by their “taste symbols”, such as zongzi, moon cakes for Mid-Autumn Festival, dumplings for Spring Festival, and Lantern Festival on the 15th day of the first lunar month.

Different from traditional Chinese festivals, Western festivals are more interactive, participatory, and carnival-like. They are self-centered and advocate individuality. Valentine’s Day, Christmas, Thanksgiving… are all like this. In fact, in our traditional festivals, there are also such interactive and participatory activities that allow consumers to get a full range of experiences from the perspectives of vision, hearing, taste, touch, and smell. “On the fifteenth day of the eighth month, the moon is full. Grandpa makes moon cakes for me. The moon cakes are round, sweet, and fragrant. One moon cake is one piece of heart.” Doesn’t this nostalgic nursery rhyme perfectly illustrate the multi-element integration of festival planners? Hearing – nursery rhymes, touch – making moon cakes by yourself, vision – from dough to models to golden moon cakes, smell – making moon cakes by yourself, and hearing – making moon cakes by yourself. —
Smell the aroma of baked mooncakes, taste — taste the mooncakes you make yourself, the taste must be different! And these “five senses” will definitely constitute a wonderful and unforgettable consumption experience for participants.

Furthermore, there are many cultural elements that can be used for marketing of traditional Chinese festivals – “guessing lantern riddles”, “appreciating lanterns”, “making rice cakes”, “making Yuanxiao”, “making zongzi”, etc. We should fully mobilize consumers’ “sense of taste, hearing, vision, touch, and smell” to better reflect “the joy of the Spring Festival, the competitive entertainment of the Dragon Boat Festival, the romance of the Chinese Valentine’s Day, and the reunion of the Mid-Autumn Festival”. Around these themes, we should fully combine the “five senses” with the elements of traditional Chinese culture to dig deeper and reflect the connotation of traditional festivals. I think such festival marketing will not only mobilize people’s impulse for festival consumption, but also touch people’s hearts and leave them with a beautiful memory of life!
